David Thomison of Andover Central focused this track and field season on enjoying the sport, building team chemistry and improving his performance across distance events.
“My primary focus this track and field season was to have fun, grow as team, build new friendships and train hard,” Thomison said.
Thomison said one of his biggest strengths is his mindset in distance running and his ability to support those around him.
“Some of my strengths are finding joy in the ‘patience’ of running long distances, inspiring my teammates to improve times and excel to their best ability,” he said. “Also, I love cheering them on during their races.”
To reach his goals of improving times, staying healthy and refining his skill set, Thomison said he committed to a structured offseason and consistent training plan.
“My goals for this season were to improve my times, not get injured and overall hone my skill,” he said. “To accomplish these goals, I rested longer during the off season before starting winter training. I ran 35-40 miles a week and followed my coaches’ guidance for work-outs.”
He said success for both himself and the team has come from consistency, improvement and strong chemistry.
“A successful season for my team would be for everyone to stay healthy and feel satisfied with their overall improvement,” Thomison said. “Honestly, our season has been successful because we’ve had awesome team chemistry, finding friendship and spending time together outside of training and events.”
After battling injury last year, Thomison said his return to health has played a major role in his improvement across events.
“Last year, I was injured and struggling to compete,” he said. “I ran a 2:06 in the open 800. In the mile, I ran a 4:52 and in the 2 mile, a 10:45. So far this year I have been healthy and have run 2:02 in the open 800, 4:42 in the mile, and 10:04 in the 2 mile.”
