Kansas Girls Flag Football – Presented by Advanced Physical Therapy

Kansas girls flag football is entering a new era, and coaches around Kansas are seeing players embrace the opportunity to compete in a sport that continues to grow throughout the state and beyond.

For Wichita Northwest coach Brooke Collins, the first varsity season has gone well, with players embracing the opportunity.

“I am extremely happy with the girls and the passion and coachability they are showing for the game,” Collins said. “They are all working extremely hard and getting better every day.”

One challenge has been helping players understand the details of flag football while adjusting to the expectations of playing a varsity sport. Collins also sees roster expansion as important to the sport’s future, particularly through sub-varsity opportunities.

At Maize, coach Shelby Hillman said the experience has remained exciting. Changes to rules and adjusting to a new league and schedule have provided challenges.

“It has gone well. It is still fun and exciting,” Hillman said. “People really want to see this sport grow and there are new opportunities for girls daily.”

Interest remains strong at both schools. Collins said players have embraced the sport, and expects participation and support to increase as more people become familiar with the sport.

“Girls are still so super pumped to play and be a part of it,” Hillman said. “Since we have known about it there has been more interest from people at the school and community.”

Both coaches have seen players develop. Collins said teamwork, adaptability and accountability have contributed to her team’s progress. Hillman said she has learned how to put players in positions to succeed.

Looking ahead, Collins wants larger rosters and more sub-varsity opportunities, while Hillman hopes more schools in the area join the sport. Both see participation and support as key to growing girls flag football in Kansas.
