Andale High School senior Abbey McNeal has built her volleyball experience around commitment, connection and an appreciation for the people who support her along the way.
McNeal credits her mother as a major source of encouragement, particularly on difficult days.
“My mom inspires me the most because days when I don’t have the right motivation or mindset she pushes me to get through and reminds me that I can do hard things.”
That support has helped McNeal handle the demands that come with being a student-athlete. She said athletics have strengthened skills that will matter long after her high school career ends.
“Athletics have taught me that when you commit to something big there are sacrifices you will make that other people will not always understand. Time management is also something I have had to get better at being an athlete, because balancing school, sports and everything else is not always easy.”
On the court, McNeal values the familiarity and trust she shares with setter Abbi Winter. The two have played together since their freshman year and also were club volleyball teammates before arriving at the high school level.
“I have played with Abbi Winter since freshmen year and before that in club volleyball. We have a very good hitter setter connection, so for me she would be the best setter on the team.”
That kind of chemistry contributes to what McNeal enjoys most about competing as part of a group. Whether the team is practicing, playing or spending time together away from volleyball, she values the relationships that make demanding moments easier.
“My favorite part about being on the Andale volleyball team is that we have fun spending time together whether it’s team bonding, practice, or games, and that even when practice is hard my teammates always make it better.”
McNeal also appreciates the support surrounding the program.
“My teammates and coaches are so supportive on and off the court and we genuinely all care about each other’s success.”
When she is away from school and volleyball, McNeal enjoys spending time with friends, going on walks and working out. She prefers using a jump serve, explaining that its difficulty is part of the appeal.
“I prefer a jump serve because it is a lot tougher when playing and I have always done it that way.”
McNeal said Andale’s community support stands out most about her hometown.
“My favorite thing about Andale is how supportive and involved the community always is no matter what the event or team is.”
