For Wichita East High School senior Eliot Hill, athletics have never been just about individual success. After 13 years of playing soccer, Hill has developed an appreciation for the commitment, communication and trust required to compete as part of a team.
Hill, who also practices basketball, has found inspiration close to home throughout his athletic career. His grandfather has been a constant presence in the stands, offering encouragement at every stage of Hill’s journey.
“My grandpa who’s been to every one of my games for as long as I can remember (almost 15 years). He’s supported me and my many cousins in everything we do, and he’s a friend to everyone he meets. He always supports me when I play and inspires me to try my hardest every time I play.”
That example of support has helped shape the way Hill approaches teammates and competition. Whether he is on the soccer field or basketball court, he values the shared responsibility that comes with representing a team.
“I love being a part of something bigger than myself. I love having someone else’s back and knowing they have mine and working together to overcome the challenges we face as a whole.”
Hill’s soccer experience has also taught him the importance of staying composed in high-pressure situations. He considers center back the most demanding position on the field because of the leadership and defensive responsibilities that come with it.
“The toughest position is probably center back because you have to direct the entire team while simultaneously guarding some of the best players on the field. Any mistake you make at this position very well might lead to a goal so you have to play perfectly in every interaction because there’s no one else behind you to bail you out.”
While Hill has learned from professional stars such as Lionel Messi, a former East player has also had a lasting influence on his development. Jesus Garcia, the goalkeeper from Hill’s freshman year and now the school’s C-team coach, helped him understand the demands of high school competition.
“The goalkeeper from my freshman year who is now the C team coach at east high, Jesus Garcia. He taught me a lot about the pressure playing high school sports and inspired me to be the best player I could be.”
Away from athletics, Hill enjoys biology and remembers his freshman-year history teacher, who has continued as his homeroom teacher for the past three years. In his free time, he watches movies, spends time with friends and continues training in basketball and soccer during both the season and offseason.
Through sports, Hill has gained lessons that extend beyond game day.
“How to work as a team and how to overcome adversity. It has taught me discipline and commitment to whatever I’m passionate about.”
