After getting hurt during last winter, senior volleyball player Lily Waters had ACL and meniscus surgery on April 10.
But Waters didn’t let that stop her. She fought back to be healthy by the time tryouts rolled around in August and is finishing a strong senior year.
“It means the world to me because volleyball is my escape from the real world, and once that got taken away, I realized how much I loved the sport,” Waters said. “Being back also shows the commitment I put into therapy just to play again, and it showed that I am stronger than I thought.”
Waters has been playing volleyball for the last seven years and has been a key part of the Panthers’ success, as she has been named part of an All-AVCTL team for the past two years.
Coming into the season, though, she was hungry for more.
“My personal goal for this year is to always play my hardest even when I feel too sore or tired,” Waters said. “I also want to continue to be a leader to my teammates and encourage them through their volleyball experience to win sub-state (on Saturday) and to keep getting close together, building strong connections on and off of the court.”
With plans on playing at the next level, Waters has been in contact with a handful of programs ranging from NAIA’s to Division II schools.
But as of right now, Waters has one goal in mind – win and leave a legacy at Derby.
