Derby’s Maliyah Lansang – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Advanced Physical Therapy

Maliyah Lansang is finishing out the final year of high school basketball for Derby. Lansang and teammates have their goals set high for the season. Derby’s basketball girls have set their first big goal of the season to win the midseason tournament. At the end of the season, the big team goal is to try and make it to the state tournament, but if the team makes it to state, Derby hopes to go all the way. Substate play begins at the beginning of March.

For the midseason tournament held in late January, Lansang told Vype Magazine this will be a good tournament to see where the team matches up with other good competitors. Lansang and teammates are looking forward to the competition at this tournament. “We should match up with some pretty good teams, so I’m just excited to see what we can do.”

During the offseason, Lansang attended camps at various colleges to gain experience and increase skills on the court. In addition to camps, Lansang worked on shooting and shooting consistency. Even though Lansang has worked on shooting, a stat she is proud of is her rebounding numbers. For a point guard, this is not typically a very high stat.

After graduation this coming spring, Lansang plans to attend college to earn a degree in education to become a teacher. Lansang would like to play basketball in college but is currently undecided where to continue in post high school education. Outside of sports, Lansang participates in a teacher internship.
