Undefeated Sedgwick baseball readies for postseason

It doesn’t matter what record a team has, there’s always those moments that just stand out more than others.

Take the Sedgwick baseball team, which is 24-0.

On March 29, they got an 11-10 walkoff win in the championship of the Kingman Shootout.

Then on April 21, they played what coach Doug Mabry called a “gritty nailbiter” in a 2-1 win over Chase County.

And on May 6, Sedgwick swept No. 2-ranked Little River.

“The Kingman win proved to ourselves that we are never out of the game,” Mabry said. “If we stick together, we always have a chance. The Chase County win showed us that little details make a big difference, and every pitch matters.

“The sweep over Little River was a good measuring stick for how we might handle some pressure.”

Team chemistry, team work — that’s all been key, of course.

“I feel that every player understands their role and is accountable for their portion of team success,” Mabry said. “On any given night, we have had a number of different players step up and have a big game.”

Senior Corey Crumrine is the leader of the pitching staff, largely due to just how efficient he is.

Senior Karston Walls leads the offense and often provides those key momentum-building moments.

Juniors Owen Luper and freshman Spencer Crumrine have also been vital.

“Early in the season, although we had six starters returning from last year’s group that won the Heart of America League and finished with a 21-4 record, we were still learning how all the parts fit together,” Mabry said. “As the season has moved along, I think this team has learned how to be better teammates, and as a result, better players.”

With the postseason looming, Sedgwick is ready.

“We look forward to getting our postseason started and are excited for the opportunities that lie ahead,” Mabry said.
