The Cheney football program graduated plenty of seniors off last year’s roster that provided leadership and direction.

Defensive lineman Nolan Durr, who is one of the few returning starters, is now ready to be that guy for the Cardinals in 2025.

“We’ve got guys who’ve been working hard behind the scenes and waiting for their shot,” Durr said. “I’m pumped to see how those guys step up and how we all grow together as a team. It’s always fun to go to play with your teammates and over the summer I have started to see the potential we have.”

With so many new faces expected to play key roles for Cheney this season, Durr said the most important part of his offseason was to spend time with these players and develop a bond.

“The main thing has been just being there with the team and getting a good rhythm going, building trust, and feeling like a real unit,” Durr said. “That time, and the commitments you make together really matter when it’s fourth quarter on a Friday night.”

As the anchor for the defense, Durr focused on his communication skills during workouts or camps.

“Whether it’s making calls, encouraging teammates, or just staying locked in, being more vocal is something I’ve been working on,” Durr said. “During the offseason, I’ve tried to lead more during practice and weights as someone guys can count on, both in action and in energy.”

Last season, Durr finished with 55 tackles (nine for a loss), six sacks and 13 quarterback hurries. He knows he will have to be better this season in order for Cheney to be a factor in Class 3A.

“Our goal is always to play tough, smart football and represent Cheney the right way, on and off the field,” Durr said. “The Cheney community is amazing and I feel like we have an obligation to do our best to make them proud.”
