Now an upperclassman for Cunningham, junior Stephen Kerschen is ready to be a force on the offensive and defensive side of things for the Wildcats.
“Now with more confidence and more experience, I am excited to truly show everyone what I can do on the field. With weak leadership last year, I’m excited for what this year has to offer as me and the seniors are now making it a priority to encourage, uplift, and lead this team to another state title,” Kerschen said.
Kerschen and the wildcats are young and hungry this year for a state championship and some well-deserved recognition.
“My individual goal is to be DPOY this season. Receiving that title as a junior would definitely turn some college heads to small town Cunningham KS and would be great publicity for me. For the team, we need to win state this year. That is the non-negotiable this season. There is no other option. All the players agree it is ridiculous that we’ve gone 1-4 for state titles and we plan to bring one more home to Cunningham, “ Kerschen said.
Kerschen plays on both sides of the ball for Cunningham as a running back and defensive back, which makes him a very capable leader for the Wildcats.
“I’ve been on our coach appointed leadership group and am just a top player on the team athletically and mentally. I feel I have one of if not the biggest drive to improve and get better. And I make sure to share that drive with the team and move my teammates to be the best they can whether on or off the field,” Kerschen said.
