Conway Springs’ Caleb Newell – Defensive Lineman Poll Winner – Presented by Shelter Insurance

By Blake Chadwick

When you win a lot, like Conway Springs, you always have guys that step up and make plays. One of those players is junior Caleb Newell.

Last season, the junior finished with seven sacks, 54 tackles and 14 TFLs.

“Caleb has played various positions and will be moved to LB this Fall,” head coach Matt Biehler said.  “He is six feet and 220 pounds and is athletic for his size. He plays guard on offense and uses his athleticism to his advantage.”

Despite winning two state championships in a row, Newell knew that if he wanted to win again, he and the rest of his teammates couldn’t stop working hard.

“I have been lifting any time I can or just exercising to keep in shape,” Newell said. “I have shown up every day to our lifting camp. We have to help bond with teammates and get stronger. I made sure I was 100% at summer weights.

The junior will look to build off of an all-league first-team defense selection.

“My personal goals are to lead the team in tackles and to not let my quarterback get sacked,” Newell said. My team’s goal is to win state again.”

For Newell, playing football has always been his peace, and since he was in first grade, it’s been all that he has known. Now, as he potentially has a chance to play college football, he is taking a deeper look at his opportunities.

“I look for a program that will push you to your limit and play you if you are working the hardest,” Newell said.  “I plan to go to college either way.”
