Maize South’s Paxton Scott – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Alexandria Johnson Shelter Insurance

By Blake Chadwick

Maize South junior Paxton Scott is quickly becoming one of the most electric guards in the AVCTL, and his rise is only beginning.

Scott describes his biggest strengths as shooting and on-ball defense, two skills that make him a true two-way presence. But behind the talent is a mindset built for long-term success.

“Never stop working,” Scott said. “There is always someone else out there wanting it more.”

Because of that mentality, Scott and the rest of the Maize South boys basketball team are ready for the next jump.

The junior plans to play college basketball and has already generated interest from multiple Division II programs, though he knows the best offers are still ahead. As a leader, he embraces the role of energizer.

“I am the encourager of the team,” he said. “I’ll always give my team 100 percent effort to not only make me better, but also my team.”

Returning nearly everyone from last season has added fuel to Maize South’s fire and Scott embraces the underdog narrative.

“It means a lot knowing how high our potential is,” Scott said. “I like how ranking sites and people still doubt us because of last year. We are going to turn some heads, that’s for sure.”

To reach state, Scott believes discipline and consistency will be key.

“We can’t settle for beating teams from our area. Don’t let down on bad competition and never stop going 100 percent. At state, you get everyone’s best shot.”
