At Valley Center, seniors Zane Devereaux and Treyton Griffin have become the steady foundation of a bowling program aiming to return to state.
Both Devereaux and Griffin picked up the sport around eighth grade and draw a lot of similarities in their strengths, personalities, and leadership styles, which definitely complement each other in a way that elevates the entire team.
For Devereaux, bowling has been a part of his life since the age of five, long before competition entered the picture. Now one of the program’s most consistent performers, he highlights striking as his biggest strength, backed by a high game of 290 and a 200 average.
“My mindset at competition is to focus and drown out the noises,” Devereaux said. “Practice is what gets you there. I can’t explain how much practice can help you out.”
The senior also hopes to continue bowling at Wichita State, where he has already received interest.
“Being recognized means a lot. It shows my hard work is paying off,” he shared. “Practice makes perfect, and I’m glad my dedication is showing.”
Griffin brings a different kind of strength to the program which is emotional steadiness and a calm presence during tense moments.
“I don’t often get upset or angry during meets, even when I’m doing badly,” Griffin said. “I think that makes me a better bowler and teammate.”
Now in his fourth year on varsity, Griffin is focused on helping Valley Center become more competitive while preparing himself for a future in aerospace engineering.
“During meets, I’m completely focused on my next shot,” Griffin said. “We’ll get to state by maintaining a good attitude and taking practice and meets more seriously.”
