Macayla Askew hits 500 rebounds (Thursday’s high school basketball games, Jan. 29, 2026)

Derby senior Macayla Askew has passed the 500 mark for career rebounds, grabbing nine rebounds in the Panthers’ 65-57 win at Topeka Thursday night.

“Macayla is a versatile player who can dominate in many ways — offensively and defensively,” Derby coach Bryan Chadwick said. “She can bring the ball up, pass or score. She’s an excellent teammate and an emerging leader.”

And Askew always finds a way to get rebounds.

“She’s just so strong on the boards,” Chadwick said. “I’m so proud of her for this accomplishment.”

Boys scores

McPherson 65, Free State 51 — McPherson outscored Free State 32-22 in the second half. McPherson’s Jett Pyle was 11 of 11 from the line and finished with 25 points, five assists. Eli REasoner had 20 points, six rebounds and Cade Strathman had five rebounds.Free State had three in double figures — Bennett Nagel (21 points, 8 rebounds), Brayden DeBruin (12) and Packson McDaniel (10).

Girls scores

Derby 65, Topeka 57 — Derby had four in double figures — Aysia Fox (13 points, four steals, five rebounds), Alex Dinsmore (11), Macayla Askew (10 points, nine rebounds) and Maya Harris (10 points, three three-pointers). Siaunna Carter and Sarai Graham had three steals apiece. Topeka was led by Ahsieyrhuajh Rayton, who had 36 points, hitting four threes.

Kapaun 58, Goddard 36 — Zoey Buckner-Franklin scored 25 points in Kapaun’s win. Presley Schmidt led Goddard with 26.

Maize South 56, Augusta 19

Olathe South 53, Hutchinson 39 — Olathe South’s Eve Long scored 28 points, had 14 rebounds and three steals. McPherson’s Danai Morgan scored a team-high 15 points with four assists. Lynnea Alvarez scored 11.

SM South 77, Wichita Northwest 33 — SM South’s Riley Kramer scored 18, hitting 4 of 8 from three, and had six steals. Laila Berndt was 3 of 5 from three for 15 points, four assists, four steals, six rebounds and Ella Jack had three threes and 11 points. Aubrey Loman led Northwest with 10, hitting 4 of 6 from the field. She also had four assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Aniah Simpson had seven rebounds.
