Maize South’s Sophie Hurley – Athlete Spotlight Presented By Shelter Insurance, Landon Head

Maize South’s Sophie Hurley did not want to focus on one specific area to improve on throughout the offseason. Overall improvement was the overriding theme for Hurley.

“I don’t think I can pick just one area to improve on,” Hurley said. “I just want to improve on becoming an overall better and more consistent player that my teammates can always count on and off the court.”

It was basketball all of the time for Hurley over the spring and summer. Once the Mavericks’ season concluded in March, it did not take much time for Hurley to be back on the court.

“I played club basketball with the Twisters and we played tournaments most weekends,” Hurley said. “I also got to guest play for a Next Level team. I went to Chicago with them and played in the Nike Tournament of Champions. In that tournament I got to play against a lot of the top competition as well as play in front of some pretty high level coaches.”

Hurley averaged seven points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist, while shooting 35 percent from behind the three-point line. But she thinks there are more pieces to Maize South’s puzzle that could make for an entertaining season.

“We have all been working really hard and I think we have the ability to exceed expectations and do things that haven’t been done in our program in a long time,” Hurley said. “As my coaches say, we have the potential to do big things this year and everyone is going to want to be a part of it.”
