Bishop Carroll Catholic High School senior running back Cooper Herrman is looking forward to one more Friday night stretch under the lights, with hopes that his offseason work translates into a deep postseason run.
“I am most excited to play on Friday nights with my guys and see our hard work from this offseason pay off,” Herrman said. “I’m excited to be a part of the deep playoff run that I believe we will have this season.”
Herrman has been a key piece in Bishop Carroll’s offense and is coming off a productive junior season in which he rushed for 717 yards on 123 carries in 10 games with five touchdowns. He also earned honorable mention all-state honors and second-team recognition in the Greater Wichita Athletic League.
The senior said his focus this offseason has been on exposure, development and physical growth. He has attended multiple college camps, including stops at South Dakota State University, Pittsburg State University, Washburn University and Lindenwood University, as he works to put his name on the radar of college programs.
“This offseason I have been going to multiple college camps to get my name on the radar (South Dakota State, Pitt State, Washburn, Lindenwood),” Herrman said. “We have contact camps this summer vs Wichita Southeast, Andover Central, Andale, and Maize South. I have been putting in hard work in the weight room and conditioning with the team.”
That work has also shown up physically. Herrman said he has increased his playing weight significantly since his sophomore year.
“I was able to go from 175 pounds my sophomore year to around 215 pounds my senior year,” he said.
On the field, Herrman has also focused on expanding his skill set, particularly in the passing game. He said that improvement has come through additional reps and situational work throughout the offseason.
“One area of my game that I want to improve on this season is improving in the passing game,” Herrman said. “The ways that I have been working on that this offseason is by going to 7-on-7s and putting myself in positions to catch the ball vs other schools from the Wichita area. I also work on catching from my quarterback Jonah Herrman often during morning workouts.”
As Bishop Carroll prepares for the upcoming season, Herrman said team success remains the top priority, along with individual goals that match the program’s expectations.
“Goals for season individually for me is to be up there for first state running back and be the best football player I could be for my team to win games,” he said. “Team goals is to finish first in GWAL and win the state championship.”
