Collegiate’s Julian Johnson – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Wichita Collegiate

By Matt Browning

Wichita Collegiate senior Julian Johnson has long been a stud on one side of the ball. Last season, Johnson was second team all-league at running back for the Spartans.

But this year, Johnson is going to be playing defense, too, so his focus throughout the offseason was improving his skills as a defensive back.

“I’ve really been focused on making sure I’m not just a one trick pony,” Johnson said. “And being able to lock in on the defensive side, as well by working with my defensive coaches and playing multiple positions. Whether that’s free safety or corner, whatever I need to do to better help my teammates and myself.”

While Johnson will play both ways in 2025, he still will be the focal point of Collegiate’s offense. He was second on the team in rushing attempts last season with 91 carries, while also finishing second in yards, too, at 472.

“My individual goals for this season are to have zero fumbles, 1,000-plus all-purpose yards and 20-plus touchdowns,” Johnson said.

To Johnson, his 2024 campaign was a disappointing one and he hopes to put that in the rearview as he gears up for his senior season.

“I’m really looking forward to having a bounce back season after having an underwhelming junior year,” Johnson said. “I think the pressure and responsibilities that a senior has to his team will help me become a better leader, player, and help me accomplish my goals and go on a deep run in the playoffs for the ultimate goal of winning state.”
