With Friday Night Lights back again for Kansas, teams across the state squared off with a chance to go 1-0 and start on the right track in the same quest for a state championship.
One of those teams that started on the right foot was Andale, which has won four of the last five Class 3A state championships.
Andale played the El Dorado Wildcats and executed in impressive fashion in about every way possible. The Indians started fast – and finished even better as they went on to win 104-0.
Andale’s Sam Harp scored four touchdowns, including a 36-yard passing touchdown and three rushing TDs.
Seventeen other Andale players had at least one carry and combined for eight touchdowns, and Andale never punted.
Defensively, 18 Andale players had tackles, and they combined for five fumble recoveries.
The Indians play Wellington (1-0) next Friday.
Wellington got a 32-13 victory over Wichita Collegiate.
The Wichita Northwest Grizzlies also started their season on the right foot with a 42-21 win over their rivals from down the road, the Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles.
Hutchinson knocked off defending Class 4A state champion Andover Central 34-0.
Derby gave up a touchdown and two-point conversion to Hays with five seconds remaining, falling 22-21 at home. Derby quarterback Krystian Dorsey had 93 rushing yards with a touchdown, as well as 102 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Three-time defending state champion, the Conway Springs Cardinals, won a close one over Nickerson, 28-20.
Moundridge started its season off with a dominating 52-0 win over Bennington.
Maize South took care of business over Newton 37-0.
The Maize Eagles picked back up where they left off after ending the season on five straight regular-season wins before the playoffs, getting a 55-28 win over Goddard.
Valley Center beat Eisenhower 38-28.
Wichita East beat Heights 23-14 to start their season.
Rose Hill beat Clearwater 23-0.
