Friday’s high school football scores (Sept. 26)

Kapaun and Wichita Northwest squared off in the heavyweight battle of unbeatens in Week 4 in the City League.

Northwest started off the game with a 21-0 first quarter, setting the Grizzlies up for what looked to be the road to an easy win.

Kapaun had other plans, as the Crusaders slowly cut the lead to 14, and then seven and eventually tied the game up at 28. From that point on, they went back and forth the rest of the second half.

“This was the craziest game I have been a part of,” Kapaun senior receiver Rocco Keller said. “We just kept our composure and we knew we had a good chance to come back the whole game. We just had to trust each other.”

The two fought until the end, with Kapaun coming out on top 43-42 in overtime.

“When we won, it didn’t feel real. Seeing all of our supporters in the student section was amazing – we ran to them and enjoyed some time with them,” Keller said.

In another big-time battle, this time in the AVCTL between undefeated Maize and the 2-1 Derby Panthers, the Maize Eagles came out on top in a huge win for league contention and Class 6A contention.

The Eagles started off really fast with a 14-0 lead, but the Panthers battled back to take a 21-14 lead. Maize score again to tie things up at halftime.

After halftime, it was all Maize as the Eagles were rolling en route to a 42-21 win to move them to 4-0.

Andale dominated Wichita Collegiate once again with a 54-7 win to move to 4-0.

In one of the most impressive stat lines of the early season, Trinity Catholic quarterback Drew Dechant helped lead his team to a 48-6 win over South Sumner. The quarterback was 4-4 for 145 yards and three touchdowns, as well as rushing for 152 yards on only four attempts. Trinity is 3-1.

Great Bend continued its winning ways by beating Wichita North 75-8 to stay undefeated.

Sterling also stayed undefeated after a 43-8 win over Ellinwood. Senior running back Zane Farney surpassed the 5,000-yard rushing mark tonight.

Haven moves to 4-0 after a 31-20 win over Douglass.

Salina Central stays undefeated with a 49-20 win over Eisenhower.
