When Goddard’s Marcy Turner got into powerlifting, it was at the suggestion of a friend.
It made sense.
“I liked lifting and fitness, in general, so I gave it a a try and fell in love with the powerlifting style of training,” Turner said.
Turns out it was an excellent decision.
She set a Class 5A record for power ratio for a girl (4.88), set the state record in bench press (185), set a Goddard record for girls in squat (360) and set a Lions record for most girls individual state titles (12).
After all that, she’s still got more goals.
“My future goals are to win individually and as a team at the collegiate level when I go to Friends next year,” Turner said.
What makes her so good is her consistency.
“I almost never miss a workout and I am addicted to chasing my goals for the next meet,” she said. “My numbers were not competitive when I started, but I became successful by continuing to show up after every trial or failure.”
As a result, her confidence has skyrocketed.
“Powerlifting is largely mental,” Turner said. “I performed poorly last year at the state meet and my meet over the summer, and I was extremely disappointed.
“I have worked on positive execution mindset and it helped me win state and hopefully will help me win nationals this year.”
It’s a lot of work, but the powerlifting community is special.
“People of all sizes and strengths all in pursuit of the same thing,” Turner said. “I have gained so many friendships through powerlifting, and total strangers or close friends are always incredibly supportive.”
