Football season can’t arrive soon enough for Hutchinson’s Oaken Williams.
He said one of the things he is looking forward to most this year is returning to the field with his teammates and working under the team’s new coach.
“I am most excited about our team’s new coach and playing football again with my teammates,” Williams said.
After a strong season that saw him record 98 tackles, five pass breakups and 1.5 tackles for loss, Williams has set even higher expectations for himself heading into the upcoming campaign.
To prepare, he has dedicated himself to improving in the offseason.
“I’ve been working out every day in the weight room and making sure to show up to every practice ready to work,” Williams said.
Williams believes there is still room for growth, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. He hopes to become an even bigger playmaker this season.
“One area I want to work on this year is getting more tackles and more interceptions,” he said.
His goals reflect that mindset. Individually, Williams is aiming for a milestone season, while also keeping team success at the forefront.
“For myself, I want to get at least 100 tackles, and I want our team to go all the way to state,” Williams said.
With his production already nearing the century mark in tackles and his commitment to offseason training evident, Williams enters the season poised to be one of the team’s defensive leaders.
Beyond high school athletics, Williams has his sights set on continuing his career at the next level. He hopes his hard work on the football field and baseball diamond will open doors in the future.
“I want to play college baseball and football in the future,” Williams said.
