Valley Center’s Jackson Child is focused on offseason work paying dividends this fall.
After months of early morning workouts, team practices and college camps, Child said he’s eager to see how the preparation translates once the season begins.
“I’m most excited about building stronger relationships with my teammates and seeing all the work we’ve put in during the offseason pay off,” Child said.
Child has committed himself to a demanding offseason schedule, lifting weights four mornings each week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays while also participating in team practices on Mondays and Wednesdays. He also attended several college football camps to compete against other athletes, receive instruction from college coaches and refine his technique.
The offseason emphasis has centered on becoming a more explosive player.
“One area I really want to improve is my quickness and explosiveness,” Child said. “During the offseason, I’ve worked on that by staying consistent in the weight room, pushing myself through every workout and focusing on movements that improve my speed and power.”
Child has set ambitious goals for his senior season. Individually, he hopes to earn All-League honors, compete for All-State recognition and attract additional college scholarship offers.
As a team, his expectations are equally high.
“Our goals are to finish with a winning record, win our regional and make a deep playoff run,” Child said.
Child put together a productive campaign last season, playing in nine games while allowing just three sacks and recording 21 pancake blocks. He hopes continued development this offseason will help him build on those numbers and contribute to a successful season for Valley Center.
