Alyssa Awtrey has built her season around leadership, consistency and connection in the midfield for Wichita East, focusing less on individual recognition and more on team development.
“My main focus this season was helping our team grow together and continue improving every game,” Awtrey said. “I wanted us to build strong chemistry, stay motivated, and meet the goals we set for ourselves as a team. Personally, I wanted to become a more confident and dependable midfielder who could contribute wherever needed.”
Operating in the center of the field and also spending time at center back, Awtrey has embraced a leadership role that requires awareness and communication. Her presence has helped stabilize Wichita East’s shape and tempo throughout matches.
“I would consider my voice, decision making, and composure to be some of my strengths,” she said. “By being in the back line/defensive mid, it allows me to see the field and being able to communicate what I see to my team is important. Responsible decision making and composure are also extremely vital as I am in the center of the field and me and my other midfielders control the tempo. My strengths help me to keep the team stable and and connected.”
Beyond tactics and performance, Awtrey also prioritized building relationships within the program. She said creating a stronger team environment was just as important as on-field development.
“I wanted to work on bonding with the girls and creating a fun but committed environment for the team,” she said. “During the offseason, me and a few other girls coordinated team dinners at each others houses to get a chance to bond in a different environment.”
Looking at the bigger picture, Awtrey defines success as steady improvement and unity rather than wins alone.
“A successful season for me would be seeing our team grow together and continue improving throughout the season,” she said. “Even if we do not win every game, I want us to stay motivated, meet the goals we set as a team, and continue building strong chemistry and trust with each other. I think success is about the progress we make, the effort we give, and how we support each other on and off the field.”
