Brittney Cuer has coached basketball at the YMCA for three years. She began when her twin boys were in Pre-K. She has also coached her daughter’s soccer team.
“My initial reasoning for volunteering at the Y was because I know there is also a need for coaches,” Cuer said. “I also grew up with my parents coaching me in sports and I wanted to be able to give my time and passion for playing sports to other kids, especially my own.”
One of Cuer’s sons was born with a heart defect, which once made the family question whether sports would ever be an option for him. Now that he is able to play, it has given Cuer even more reason to coach.
“When we initially got his diagnosis, we never thought playing sports would be a possibility for him so being able to coach him and watch him compete with his twin brother, have fun and defy all odds has made volunteering so worth it,” Cuer said.
Cuer is fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom while also working part-time at the family business. Life is always busy, but she says she is grateful to have plenty of help.
“I’m not too sure if I will ever be able to balance my life completely but I have a lot of help,” Cuer said. “Having grandparents close by and always present in my life and my children’s lives helps me manage day to day activities.”
Seeing the joy her kids and the other children have for the sports they play is something Cuer cherishes every season.
“Knowing I can have a small, positive impact on the kid’s lives that I get to coach, is something I will always take pride in,” Cuer said.
