Committed to play at Wichita State University next year, junior catcher Maddox Drumright still has his sights set on winning state this season.

“I’m excited to see the possible run we can make in the postseason because the first couple games I’ve seen some good things that I believe will give us that chance, and people stepping up who we needed to, along with a great coaching staff with a lot of experience that has its vision set for a deep run and is going to give us the best opportunity for it,” Drumright said.

Looking to improve his command on the field was one of the main things Drumright focused on during the offseason.

“Being an upperclassman, everyone is looking at me for help with things because I have experience. I also want to improve my footwork and blocking behind the dish. I worked on those areas by doing catching drills and going to the Just Block It Camp at Wichita State this offseason,” Drumright said.

Drumright’s role on the team is significant this year, mainly because of his experience behind the plate.

“Having the experience of playing high-level baseball for a long time, people ask me to help with things. I also feel the need to work and stay motivated so everyone around me does the same because I have goals I want to reach, and for that to happen I need a team behind me,” Drumright said.

Playing at WSU next year is also one of Drumright’s main motivations this season.

“I have goals and dreams of going further than just high school, and being committed to WSU, I still have to work to prove myself because I want to have a chance to start at the next level my freshman year. The only way to do that is to get better during the spring and summer seasons, along with putting in work during the offseason,” Drumright said.
