Ian and Jasiyet Carter are learning that making a difference in their community doesn’t always require a grand gesture. Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as a toothbrush.
The Wichita Northwest High School students have volunteered with Simply Hygiene, a nonprofit organization that provides hygiene products to individuals and families in need. Through their service, they have seen firsthand how everyday essentials can have a meaningful impact on people’s lives.
“It’s good to volunteer because you could help out other people,” Ian Carter said. “It helps other people out when they don’t have stuff. It’s good to volunteer and help out because you’re helping people get things they need.”
For Ian, the mission of Simply Hygiene is easy to understand. Access to basic hygiene items can improve both health and confidence, making products many people take for granted incredibly valuable.
“Simply Hygiene is good for people because a toothbrush and toothpaste make your teeth clean,” Ian said. “If you didn’t have a toothbrush and toothpaste, your teeth wouldn’t be clean, and your mouth wouldn’t smell good. Body wash makes you clean, and deodorant helps keep your armpits from smelling and sweating.”
His sister, Jasiyet Carter, was introduced to Simply Hygiene through a family member and has continued volunteering ever since.
“I chose to because my aunt had started telling us about it,” Jasiyet said. “Ever since I’ve been going, it’s basically a part of me to go.”
That introduction has turned into a commitment to serving others, giving Jasiyet an opportunity to support families throughout the Wichita community while learning the importance of giving back.
Jasiyet hopes more people learn about the organization’s work and the impact it continues to have.
“I want people to know how Simply Hygiene became such a big thing,” she said.
She also credits one person for helping him discover a passion for volunteering.
“Probably my aunt because she encouraged me to do it, and I love doing it now,” Jasiyet said.
Through their work with Simply Hygiene, the Carter siblings are helping ensure that basic necessities reach those who need them most. While hygiene products may seem like small items, Ian and Jasiyet have learned they can make a big difference in someone’s daily life.
