De’Moni Harris knows his final season of high school football is about more than statistics. For the Wichita South senior, it’s an opportunity to show the results of months of hard work while sharing one last season with the teammates he considers family.
“I am the most excited about showing how much work I’ve put in and how much I’ve improved this offseason,” Harris said. “I am also excited to play one last year with my teammates. They are family to me.”
Harris enters his senior campaign coming off a productive junior season in which he recorded 81 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups. While those numbers provide a solid foundation, he believes there’s another level he can reach.
The offseason has been centered on making sure he’s ready to take that next step. Harris has spent countless hours in the weight room, attended team conditioning sessions and continued working on his own by running position drills in his backyard.
“I’ve been going to the gym to work out, going to conditioning with my team and doing drills in my backyard,” Harris said.
The physical preparation has been paired with a mental approach. Harris wants to become a more complete defender by refining his technique and improving the consistency of his game.
“I want to have a more fluid and smooth play style,” Harris said. “I’ve worked on this by taking a lot more reps, watching film and studying the position.”
His goals reflect the confidence he’s gained through that preparation. Individually, Harris is aiming to surpass the century mark in tackles, record at least five sacks and earn first-team All-City honors.
“My individual goals are to exceed 100 tackles, have five or more sacks and make first-team All-City,” Harris said.
Just as important are the goals he has for the Titans as a team. Harris hopes Wichita South can take a significant step forward by winning at least five games and making a postseason run.
“My team goals are to win five or more games and make a run in the playoffs,” Harris said.
Beyond high school, Harris hopes his senior season will help open the door to the next level. He plans to continue playing football in college and expects the recruiting picture to become clearer as the season unfolds.
