As Wichita East prepares for the high school football season, defensive back Cameron Akins is eager to take the field after spending the offseason working to elevate his game.
Akins said his offseason centered on speed training and weightlifting with a trainer while also sharpening one specific part of his game.
“The area I wanted to improve was my DB technique, and I worked on it by consistently practicing,” Akins said.
After an impressive season in which he recorded 19 passes defended, eight pass breakups, 18 tackles and did not allow a catch or touchdown in man coverage, Akins has set even higher expectations for himself this fall.
His individual goals include recording at least six interceptions, more than 15 pass breakups and 50 tackles while not allowing a touchdown in man coverage. He also wants to avoid missed assignments and earn first-team all-conference honors.
“My goals are 6-plus interceptions, 15-plus pass breakups, 50-plus tackles and zero touchdowns allowed in man coverage,” Akins said. “I don’t want any missed assignments. I want to be first-team all-conference and get a film good enough to send to college coaches.”
Akins’ aspirations extend beyond his own statistics. He wants to help Wichita East become a disciplined team that plays with maximum effort and makes a deep postseason run.
“I want us to be the most disciplined, max-effort team, have a winning record going into the playoffs, get to at least the third round and allow fewer than 14 points as a defense,” Akins said.
Looking beyond high school, Akins is focused on earning an opportunity to play at the next level.
“My future plans are to work as hard as possible for a scholarship,” he said. “From there, it’s one step at a time.”
