Wichita Northwest’s River Peters – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Shelter Insurance – Shari Lewis

River Peters from Wichita Northwest is one of the most electrifying players in the state.

The senior guard is a three-level scorer who is in his first year in class 6A playing for the Grizzlies. Peters was an Emporia Spartan last year, and he was named to the all-state second team in class 5A as a junior while averaging 18.4 points per game. As a sophomore in Emporia, Peters helped lead the Spartans to a 15-6 record, a significant turnaround from the 4-18 season they posted the year before.

“The biggest difference is everybody in the program cares a lot more; it is way more fun to play with these guys,” Peters said. “It is like a family. My relationships with teammates are a lot better.”

Peters has picked up right where he left off this year as a Grizzly, averaging 17 points per game and a couple of highlight dunks a night as he has helped Northwest post an undefeated 5-0 start.

“I would like to make 1st team all-league and win the state title, we are very capable of doing that.”

The Grizzlies were already one of the most promising teams in class 6A after making it to state last year and returning some solid firepower led by the first-team all-league guard Eli Benning, and then you add Peters and Wichita Southeast transfer DJ Brown, the Grizzlies quickly emerged as a class 6A favorite behind Shawnee Mission Northwest, Wichita Heights and Mill Valley, whom they faced in the third place game at state last year.

“I’m going to keep the team motivated, make sure we are doing what we are supposed to, and stay together as a team,”  Peters said.
