Quavon Harris, a 5’10, 185 pound senior linebacker for the Wichita Northwest Grizzlies football team, recently completed his final season of high school football with the Grizzlies. However, while nearly every other senior player in the state has played his last high school game, Quavon still has one left to play.
Quavon was recently invited to play in the Kansas Senior Shrine Bowl, an honor bestowed on a rare few seniors, “I’m really proud of the opportunity to play in the Shrine Bowl. It’s an honor because I worked really hard for this.”
Harris said that he first found his love for football because “I used to run around a lot. I had a lot of energy, so I always wanted to be active. And when I saw other kids playing football… Well, at that point, I just knew that I wanted to play football.”
Going into his senior season, Harris had some simple goals in mind. He wanted to have better flexibility. He wanted to be more focused in game situations. He wanted to be sure that he paid close attention to detail. But overall, he really only had one goal, “I just want to win.”
Harris and his teammates did exactly that; they won, and they won a lot. This past season, Quavon and the Grizzlies fought their way to a 9-2 mark, with both losses coming to Manhattan High, the eventual state runner-up. Those losses obviously were difficult to deal with, but thanks to his nomination to the Shrine Bowl, Harris will have one last chance to end his high school career with a win.
After graduation, Harris plans to continue his education at the collegiate level to study business.
