Conway Springs’ Taylor Wykes – Athlete Spotlight Presented By SCCDAT

By Blake Chadwick

Senior forward Taylor Wykes has done so much for the football, baseball, and basketball teams but has done even more for the community.

“I started coaching younger kids my freshman year,” Wykes said. “I have coached 2nd-6th grade flag football and 6th grade girls basketball. I started coaching these kids because I thought it would be fun to help them learn the game of football and basketball to the best of their ability. Coaching flag football has been a blast for the past 4 years, with a winning record of 28-1. Coaching has also helped me realize what it takes to get the kids ready for a game coming up and what all of my coaches have to go through to get everyone prepared.”

Wykes’ leadership in the community has had a direct correlation with how he leads his teams.

“I have been a leader for the team by pushing everyone else so they can be the best players they are capable of being. Being a team leader is great because it shows that coach has trust in me to make decisions, and it means that anyone who has a question or has a problem can talk to me about it without having to always go to coach. When we are on the court and playing a game, I call the plays and direct the offense to get the best look at scoring.”

Wykes has been playing varsity since he was a freshman and has always played against older kids growing up. Now, as a senior, Wykes is ready to dominate.

“Coach has pushed me ever since we got into middle school basketball to be the best player I could be when I got to the varsity level,” Wykes said.
