Samya Slater, a senior at Northwest Wichita High School, has made a lasting impact on her school’s varsity wrestling team. As the wrestling season nears its end, Slater reflects on her goals, challenges, and accomplishments, both on and off the mat. This season, Slater’s primary goal was to place in the top three at every tournament, a goal she has successfully achieved. Slater’s dedication and hard work are evident as she consistently made it to the championship rounds, including at regionals, where she placed third.
Despite the obstacles of weight cuts and long practices, Slater’s unwavering focus allowed her to push through, thanks to the support of her coaches, Taven Kendall and Coach Niggs. During the off-season, Slater committed to weight training, attended the Northwest Summer Wrestling Camp, and strengthened her skills in jiu-jitsu which are all activities that contributed to her success this season.
In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Slater is also a talented photojournalist for her school newspaper, capturing moments that tell stories beyond the wrestling mat. Slater’s passion for photography will continue as a side hobby, even as she will pursue a double major in psychology and sociology after high school. Slater plans to continue her academic journey by earning her phlebotomy license.
Slater’s legacy as a three-time state qualifier, city league, and regional champion is one of perseverance, focus, and passion. With dreams of becoming a state champion this season, Samya Slater embodies the spirit of hard work, determination, and dedication both in sports and life.
