Bishop Carroll’s Blake Bowmaker – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Old Chicago

By Matt Browning

Coming off a broken ankle injury, Bishop Carroll senior defensive back Blake Bowmaker new this past offseason was a critical one.

He spent plenty of time looking to get back to the level he was at in 2024.

“This offseason has been a big one for me since coming off a broken ankle,” Bowmaker said. “So just getting in the weight room, doing defensive back drills, and bonding with my teammates, building the camaraderie.”

Being instinctual is critical for a defensive back, so Bowmaker focused on those types of attributes while also rehabbing his ankle.

Last season, he had 33 tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble before his season-ending injury in week six.

“I have been trying to improve my ability to read the quarterback, as well as reading the play before it happens,” Bowmaker said. “I have been able to do this by our 7 on 7, contact camps, and by simply watching film picking up on little tendencies. “

The Golden Eagles struggled to a 2-7 record last season, so there is plenty of motivation for Bowmaker and his teammates.

“This year I have high expectations for myself and for my team,” Bowmaker said. “For me it is getting first team again and just making plays, putting our team in opportunities to win games. As a team we are excited to get back out there, with our last two seasons not going the way we planned, as a team the end goal is always a state championship.”
