Cheney High School senior Landon Meng brings focus, leadership, and a team-first mentality to the football field, where his competitive edge and accountability define his game.
“My Dad inspires me the most because he’s always pushed me to leave it all on the field every game since my first one in 3rd grade during peewee and always wants me to strive to be the best person I can be,” Meng said. That standard of effort drives his preparation, film study, and willingness to embrace pressure in every snap.
On the football field, Meng plays cornerback and wide receiver and thrives in the one-on-one battles that define both sides of the ball. “I play Cornerback and Wide Receiver and I believe that Corner is the hardest position in football because it is 1 on 1 and if you mess up everyone sees it and one little slip up can change the course of the whole game,” he said.
Some of his most vivid memories come from high-stakes games. He recalls “when we played in a giant snowstorm for the State Championship” and “Watching Jack Voth score the game-winning touchdown against Andale in overtime.” Those experiences reinforced his belief in preparation, resilience, and executing under pressure.
“During pregame I listen to music but most importantly I visualize my assignments and think of scenarios that could happen mid game then think of a way to react to that,” Meng said. Football, he added, has taught him that “working hard and doing things that others will not do puts you in a better position and makes you a leader.”
Off the field, Meng’s favorite subject is shop, where he enjoys building and the relationships that come with it. “My favorite subject is shop because we get to build things. You have better relationships with shop teachers than normal teachers. My favorite teacher is Mr. Kershen because he lets us have fun in class,” he said.
He spends his free time hunting, fishing, and “spending time with family and friends,” and is involved in FFA, FCA, and community service. Meng also values the influence of teammate and friend Nolan Durr, who pushes him in the weight room and in chasing college football dreams, and the bond with teammates he describes as “a big family” that grows closer every day.
