Senior Alex Smith competes in the long jump and triple jump for Clearwater and is excited for the upcoming season.
“I’m most excited to see the progression of our entire team, especially the freshman and sophomore class because they have a lot of depth coming into this year,” Smith said.
During the offseason, Smith spent much of his time working on his craft.
“Indoor club track was the pinnacle of my offseason work,” Smith said. “This year is all about fine-tuning my form for both long jump and triple jump to where I’m getting every inch that I can to succeed. Being part of an indoor track club meant I got to spend a lot of time with some Division I coaches and athletes who taught me things I would have never learned on my own.”
Smith has set goals for himself this season that he has not had before.
“My goal is to work my way up, meet after meet, and eventually get to the postseason where hopefully I’ll be near the 21- and 41-foot marks for long jump and triple jump,” Smith said.
Looking to help Clearwater score as many points as possible this year, Smith is focusing on precision and consistency.
As a senior, Smith said he is motivated heading into the season.
“My motivation comes from my work ethic. I’ve always been a sports guy and track just so happens to be my favorite. Being able to show up to practice and put in the work is all the motivation I need not just for track, but for my future as well,” Smith said.
Next year, Smith plans to attend Wichita State University and major in accounting.
“I’ve always been a big business guy and WSU has one of, if not the best business program in the state,” Smith said.
