As a senior at Derby High School, Brianna Bruce is making her final cross country season one to remember. A Panther with determination and heart, Bruce has her sights set on breaking her personal record and qualifying for State, not just individually, but as a team.

Last year, Bruce hit a personal best of 21:59 at regionals in Topeka. This season, she’s been focused on building her endurance and maintaining a strong pace beyond the two-mile mark. Her recent time of 22:43 shows she’s on track, and she’s aiming for another PR to finish out her senior season.

Earlier this season, Bruce earned her first first-place medal in a JV race at Lake Afton, and she’s working toward her goal of medaling in a varsity race. “I want to qualify for the state race, not only for myself but for my entire team,” she said.

Inspired by former teammates and coaches, Bruce also strives to be a leader and role model for younger runners, just as others were for her. Bruce started running in eighth grade and was always encouraged to keep going and not to give up on her dream of running.

Outside of cross country, Bruce is a multi-talented student involved in track, both sprints and distance, orchestra, and JROTC, where she currently serves as Assistant Element Leader. She’s working toward becoming a Flight Commander or Flight Sergeant.

After high school, Bruce plans to serve in the Air Force while studying to become a firefighter/paramedic at either Butler Community College or WSU Tech.

For Brianna Bruce, senior year is more than just about running fast; it’s about finishing strong, leading with purpose, and leaving a legacy.
