Derby’s Carsen Carpenter – Volleyball Spotlight – Presented by Uplink

Senior leader from Derby High School, Carsen Carpenter is hoping to help the
volleyball team work together this year as one unit. “My biggest goal is having a
team with good communication and chemistry.” These are the team goals for
Derby, but Carpenter also has individual goals to accomplish. Carpenter would like
to find the open spots on the court when attacking the ball. Working hard to
increase the on the court IQ is an important goal for Carpenter this season.

Substate is a part of the season Carpenter is most looking forward to. Carpenter
shared how the team has moved forward and come together as the season has
moved on. “As a team, we started off the season not so well, but as we progress
forward, we have turned a corner tremendously.”

During the summer months, Carpenter was recovering from a knee injury and
didn’t participate in the training Carpenter had hoped for. Carpenter was able to
attend camps, workouts, and scrimmages. During this time as well, Carpenter took
on a leadership role and helped other teammates where help was needed and where
potential weak spots needed to be addressed to help the team. Although it was hard
for Carpenter to sit out from playing, Carpenter also shared a new and positive
perspective learned from this experience. “All together I believe this hard obstacle
has helped me grow into a much smarter and more talented athlete in all aspects of
the game.”

Carpenter plans to attend junior college after spring graduation and play softball
while studying nursing. Later Carpenter would like to become an OBGYN,
Pediatrician, or a Physician’s Assistant.
