Brennan Van Wyhe is eager to see what awaits Kingman this fall.
With new opponents on the schedule, a revamped defensive scheme and a group of young linemen developing on both sides of the ball, Van Wyhe believes the Eagles have plenty to look forward to heading into the season.
“I’m very excited to compete against the new teams in our schedule,” Van Wyhe said. “We play teams we have never seen before. I’m also very excited to get to work with the new linemen on both sides of the ball and help them get better. We also installed a new defensive system and I’m really excited to see how that will work.”
As one of the team’s veteran leaders, Van Wyhe has spent the offseason setting the standard through his work ethic. While he skipped the individual camp circuit in favor of team activities, he made sure his time was spent where he felt it would make the biggest impact.
“Our whole team has been dedicated in the weight room this summer,” Van Wyhe said. “Our coaches have put a high expectation on us this year and we have met that expectation. I have not gone to any camps besides our team camps, but I’m in the weight room all the time.”
That commitment has centered on becoming a more complete player, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Van Wyhe has emphasized improving his explosiveness and refining his pass-rushing technique to become a bigger playmaker.
“I would like to improve on my defensive abilities,” he said. “I have been in the weight room working on explosiveness and pass rushing.”
The hard work reflects the lofty goals Van Wyhe has established for his senior season. Individually, he hopes his performance earns recognition among the state’s top players, while team success remains just as important.
“My personal goals this year are to be first-team all-league on both sides of the ball,” Van Wyhe said. “I also want to be first-team All-State in 2A for offensive line.”
Beyond individual accolades, Van Wyhe believes the Eagles can take meaningful steps as a program if they continue to improve throughout the season.
“The goals I have for my team are to have a winning season and win a few playoff games, as well as get better each week,” he said.
