For Udall brothers Jordan and James Hornecker, having their dad in the military has come with both pros and cons.
On the plus side, Jordan has seen his future influenced by his father’s career.
“As of right now I want to pursue a career in piloting,” Jordan said. “Growing up, my father has always worked in the air force so I have always been around and interested in airplanes.”
On the other hand, James has had to deal with challenges that most kids don’t experience.
“When I was younger when my dad was deployed it was a little difficult because I didn’t see him as much,” James said.
Still, there are parts of being a military kid that have proved beneficial, both at a young age and now in high school.
“I feel like compared to others around me I have been taught to be more disciplined,” Jordan said. “This shows up in other areas of my life too, like sports, where I stay consistent in the gym and put in the work to improve. I also feel like I was taught stronger manners than many people around me, and to be more mindful and respectful.”
For James, being a military kid may have changed the trajectory of his future.
“It (being a military kid) influenced me to be a better person and maybe follow him and join the military,” James said.
