The goal for the season for Wichita Collegiate’s Logan Clay has been clear from the start: reach elite distances in both the discus and javelin while helping lead a small but competitive team onto the state podium.
“My primary focus for this season was to throw over 200 feet in the discus and over 180 in the javelin,” Clay said. “I am so close to both of my goals and I know I’ll get them by the end of the season.”
Clay has already taken major steps toward those marks while continuing to build on an already decorated high school career. In 2025, he finished as the Class 3A state runner-up in the discus with a throw of 178 feet, 3 inches. That same season, he recorded a personal-best discus mark of 191-1.75 and a javelin throw of 169-2.
This year, Clay has elevated his performances even further, setting school records in both events. He has thrown 199-6 in the discus and 178 feet in the javelin, and also captured a KSHSAA K-State Relays championship in the discus with a mark of 183-8.25.
A key factor in his progression, Clay said, has been his attention to technique.
“My strengths when it comes to discus and javelin would have to be my technique in both,” he said. “I have put a lot of work into it and I think it really shows. I know when state comes around I’ll be putting these to good use, and hopefully get my team some points when it matters most.”
His offseason, however, came with an unexpected setback. Clay suffered a broken foot during football season, limiting his training and delaying his return to throwing.
“Coming into the offseason I wanted to work on getting a lot stronger,” Clay said. “Unfortunately I broke my foot during the third game of football season. I didn’t really start throwing again until the start of March where I would start to get back to work.”
Since returning, he has focused on rebuilding strength and regaining consistency in both events.
Looking ahead, Clay has his sights set not only on individual milestones but also on team success at the state level.
“I think a successful season would be getting on the podium at state as a team,” he said. “Considering how small our team is, it would be such a massive accomplishment. For me I think winning state in the discus and throwing a PR in javelin at state would make me happy.”
