As he heads into his senior season at Wichita West High School, quarterback Colby Eck-Watkins is determined to make it a year to remember. A returning leader for the Pioneers, Eck-Watkins has set his sights on both personal and team milestones for the 2025 season.
“My individual goal is to make the All-City team,” he told Vype Magazine. “But more importantly, I want to help our team win a playoff game.” That hunger for postseason success is fueling his preparation and leadership as he takes the reins of a young, developing roster.
One game stands out in particular: a rematch with rival Wichita South. “I’m looking forward to winning as many games as possible and getting revenge on South,” he said, making it clear that competitive fire is driving him this fall. While the team faces challenges after graduating many varsity players, Eck-Watkins has embraced the role of mentor and motivator.
This offseason, he focused heavily on speed and arm strength. Two key areas that helped him grow into a dual-threat quarterback. Last season, he proved that potential by scoring five touchdowns in a single game and rushing for over 100 yards, a breakout moment for a player previously known more for his passing.
Beyond football, Eck-Watkins is a multi-sport athlete, competing in basketball and javelin. Although he’s still undecided on his post-graduation plans, he hopes to one day become a coach and continue influencing the game he loves. With a new season ahead and unfinished business on the field, Colby Eck-Watkins is ready to lead Wichita West with confidence, grit, and heart.
