Winfield’s Kellen Gibson – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Alia Tate PenFed Realty

Last year, Winfield’s Kellen Gibson was highly successful in the javelin, becoming the league, regional and state champion with a personal best of 191 feet, 8 inches.

Now entering his senior year, Gibson still has big plans for himself and his team.

“My motivation this season is to try to defend my state title and show I can do it again and that I’m one of the best in the state in the javelin,” Gibson said.

During the offseason, Gibson focused on continuing to improve so he can defend his state title.

“Through the year, I have been doing a handful of javelin- and throwing-specific workouts and movements,” Gibson said. “The area I am wanting to improve the most is my marks and reaching the 200-foot mark. I am also trying to perfect my form to translate into my college career. Through the offseason, I focused mainly on my form rather than the throwing aspect of it.”

One of Gibson’s main motivations, along with winning state again, is reaching his personal goal of 200 feet.

As a senior at Winfield, Gibson sees himself as a leader and someone younger athletes can look up to.

“On my team, all my coaches say I am a role model or a leader. My job is to keep us together and get us back to work,” Gibson said.
