Loren Sweat, a 2025 outfielder for Derby High School’s softball team, is setting her sights high for this season. As she enters her final year of high school softball, Sweat’s focus is not just on personal growth but also on leading her team to a state title. “Individually, I want to continue to grow and play to the best of my abilities,” she says, aiming to step into a leadership role. “Our team goal at Derby is always the same – we want a state title. We’re working hard to build good chemistry, push each other, and improve every day.”

Looking forward to the season, Sweat is excited about the competition and challenges ahead. “We face great teams both in the regular season and postseason,” Sweat shared. “I’m confident in our team to rise to the level of competition.” To prepare for this season, Sweat worked during the offseason, refining her hitting technique and focusing on weightlifting to build strength.

Last season was a testament to Sweat’s resilience. Despite tearing her MCL and being advised to have surgery, she made a remarkable recovery and returned to play in the postseason. Sweat finished the season with a strong batting average and earned AVCTL Honorable Mention. “I’m proud of how hard I worked to get back on the field,” Sweat says.

Looking ahead, Sweat is committed to Dodge City Community College, where she will continue her softball career while studying pre-med with hopes of becoming a pediatric surgeon. Sweat has also been a dedicated member of Derby’s tennis team, earning All-State honors with her doubles partner. In addition, she has participated in the AmeriCorps program by spending time working closely with first graders.
